Abandoned Cart Emails: How to Recover Lost Sales
Abandoned cart email strategy for UK stores - timing, content and examples that bring shoppers back to the checkout.
11 min read
Most shoppers abandon their cart at least once. Abandoned cart emails are the most reliable way to recover some of that lost revenue - here's how to build an effective sequence.
Why carts get abandoned
High delivery costs, unexpected charges, comparison shopping and distraction are the usual culprits. A well-timed email addresses these with a helpful nudge, not a hard sell.
A sequence that works
- Email 1 (1-2 hours later): a friendly reminder showing the items.
- Email 2 (24 hours later): add social proof or answer a common question (shipping, returns).
- Email 3 (48-72 hours): a genuine incentive, often a discount or free shipping, with a clear deadline.
Content essentials
- Show the exact products left behind with images.
- A single, clear call to action back to checkout.
- Reassure about delivery time, cost and returns.
- An honest incentive where appropriate - don't overuse discounts.
Compliance note
Only email shoppers who you have permission to contact. If a visitor hasn't consented to marketing (for example, they only browsed without an account), a marketing email may fall outside your permission. Check your practices against PECR and UK GDPR.
